Houston Press Conference

*Abstract/Description of Event/Activity:
On Friday, September 1, 2000 Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown will join several substance abuse service providers in recognizing September as national Drug Addictions and Recovery Month in Houston. The emphasis will focus on adquate service provisions for adolscents in our community. The local efforts will also target the media to educate and provide relevant information on the positive aspect of substance abuse treatment. The mayor will also inform those in attendance of Houston's interest in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's initiative to enhance and promote treatment service delivery. Finally there will be a preliminary "call for substance abuse data" to local providers to participate in the Houston/National Office of Drug Control Policy Partnership Agreement, in which statistics on client numbers, prevalency, and evaluative measures will be reviewed to possibly assist in determining future national substance abuse strategies.

This community forum will address funding availability for adolescent treatment; the involvement of the faith community in meeting the comprehensive needs of substance abusing youth; the importance of treatment to Central Texas; the juvenile justice system; and inhalant abuse.

Youth Fiesta 2000

*Abstract/Description of Event/Activity:
The El Paso Alliance Recovery Community Organization is celebrating recovery buy hosting a youth fiesta at the Ysleta Student Entrepreneur Center located at 8455 Alameda Ave. from 12 noon to 7:00 p.m. We will feature a battle of youth bands, entertainment by local groups, folklorico dancers, singers, game booth, several local agency program information booths, a classic car show, food & refreshments. We will also offer a $5.00 steak dinner.
