In conjunction with Recovery Month and in recognition of the needs of the adolescent population, the Mid-Atlantic ATTC, in collaboration with SAARA, the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, and the Maryland office of Substance Abuse Services, is presenting a two-day conference focusing on various aspects of substance abuse prevention and treatment for adolescents. Workshop presentations include Developments in Juvenile Justice; The Adolescent Brain: Clinical Implications; Preventing Underage Drinking; Safe and Drug Free Schools, and more!

Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention for Adolescents Conference

*Abstract/Description of Event/Activity:
Mid-Atlantic Regional two day conference featuring Michael Nerney as keynote speaker. Training tracks are juvenile justice, advocacy/prevention, treatment and screening/assessment. The first day of the conference will feature a luncheon hosted by SAARA, the consumer/advocacy group and afternoon workshops. Dr. Rahdert from NIDA will present information on the POSIT in one of these workshops. The second day will feature 3 and 6 hour training institutes.Sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Addiction Technology Transfer Center (SAMHSA/CSAT funded) Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, SAARA, Maryland Office of Substance Abuse Services.

Run for Recovery

*Abstract/Description of Event/Activity:
Vanguard Foundation is celebrating National Alcohol and Drug Addiction "Recovery Month" in September with a very special event on Sunday, September 17, 2000. The Run for Recovery® is held as part of a series of nationwide activities celebrating National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. This event is the largest celebration of Recovery Month in the Washington, DC area. It will bring together members of the substance addiction community, business sector and non-profit organizations to celebrate the tremendous strides taken by individuals who have undergone successful treatment and recognizes those in this field who have dedicated their lives to helping people in need.

The event will be held near the MCI building and Pentagon Centre Mall at Pentagon City in Arlington, Virginia on Sunday, September 17, 2000. The activities will begin at 7:30a.m with race registration, the race will begin at 9:00a.m. and all activities will conclude around 11:00 a.m. We expect to attract more than 1000 participants and raise awareness for National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.

Participants can register for a competitive 5K Run or a non-competitive 5K Walk. A walk is included to attract participation from all age groups, regardless of their fitness ability. Race sponsors, which include The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, Motient Corporation, Fresh Fields Whole Foods Market, Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority, UptownArlington.com, 202 Design, Worldcom, ABC7 WJLA-TV, DrinkMore Water, Residence Inn by Marriott, Pentagon Centre and other local merchants, will provide prizes awards for participants in each age category, as well as random prizes for all participants. Each contributing participant will receive a T-shirt and promotional merchandise.

The Vanguard Foundation supports Vanguard Services Unlimited, a non-profit, community-based organization established in Arlington in 1962, which offers high quality substance abuse treatment to adult men and women, mothers with children, and adolescent boys and girls.
