Recent studies indicate that young adults with addiction disorders are seldom addicted to just one substance or behavior and have more difficulty achieving sobriety than their adult counterparts. Understanding the specifics of young adult neurobiology
is one key factor to improving treatment outcomes. Other factors include: the significant life changes and high levels of peer pressure young adults experience, and the impact of addiction on the family system. Caregivers must be prepared to manage these issues
to help more young adult patients toward recovery. Learning Objectives: • Demonstrate a better understanding of the neurobiology of addiction in young adult patients. • Summarize methods for treating young adults addicted to multiple substances and with multiple
behavioral disorders. • Discuss how to identify and respond to the treatment issues of patients with dual diagnosis. • Explain how to integrate treatment plans for the "whole patient" and family system. • Assess how to utilize 12-step fellowships as a recovery
tool.
