Beauty and Body Image: Cultivating the Whole Person  (7449)

03/09/2014 12:00 PM - 03/09/2014 3:00 PM

With increased access to the Internet, media and celebrity culture we face unprecedented pressure to perfect our image. The first thing we encounter as human beings is our physical image. The pursuit of perfection and illusion can often be damaging to
one’s physical and mental health. Growing up in the fashion industry, Yomi became the first African face of Maybelline cosmetics while pursuing her undergraduate degree. She shares her experience of being a college student portraying the face of an international
cosmetics brand, while undergoing a reflective, yet often daunting negotiation of her own self-image. Yomi uses her experience in fashion to reach young people and women internationally through a probing inquiry into self. Through her introspective and thought-provoking
presentations, Yomi helps individuals to deconstruct the ideas that are projected by the media. She encourages participants to create a “personal image” that is empowering and defined by self.
