Durham Celebrates Recovery  (7581)

09/25/2014 12:00 PM - 09/25/2014 7:00 PM

On Thursday September 25th, the Durham County Criminal Justice Resource Center hosted a recovery event with the help of thirty community Providers and Agencies. With the theme of ‘Reach Out, Speak Up, Join the Voices for Recovery’, the event celebrated
mental health and substance use recovery by featuring recovery speakers and poets willing to speak up about the stigma of behavioral disorders and proclaim that they are proud of their recovery. It is estimated that 450 to 500 people attended some portion
of the event. One highlight was a skit performed by DurhamT.R.Y. (Together for Resilient Youth) members who wore funny costumes to make the point that no matter how funny you look or sound, everyone can say ‘no’ to drugs. They also offered prizes to anyone
in the audience who would come forward and announce what substances they had said ‘no’ to. Another highlight was the recovery poster competition. Developing art posters has become a way to promote interest throughout National Recovery Month and Agencies then
bring their best examples to the event. Participant feedback indicated that Line dancing was the most popular group activity.
