Dr. J. Michael Haynie answers questions submitted by viewers on the August Road to Recovery Program: Coming Home: Supporting Our Military Service Members, Veterans, and Their Families.
Many service members deal with mental health problems attributable to their military experience, and many turn to substance use in response to their pain. Help for service members, veterans, and their families must encompass not only treatment for mental and substance use disorders but also the support elements that sustain recovery—employment, health and well-being, housing, and education. This show will describe the challenges facing those who have served and their families, the support available from both the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and civilian behavioral health systems, and the need to expand family-centered services.

Before beginning his academic career, Dr. Haynie served for 14 years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. He founded the Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program, an initiative designed to offer world-class training in entrepreneurship and small business management to post-9/11 veterans disabled as a result of their military service.
