Recovery Month Twitter Chat on Trauma: Treatment and Recovery through the Delivery of Behavioral Health Services—March 28, 1:00 p.m. EDT

In past months, the nation has been shocked by traumatic events, including recent shootings in Newtown, Connecticut and Aurora, Colorado. These events have brought mental illness and substance use disorders to the forefront of the national conversation and have sparked numerous discussions about how to best support individuals who have experienced trauma—whether through violence, war, neglect, or natural disasters. As discussed in a Recovery Month webcast (http://www.recoverymonth.gov/Resources-Catalog/2011/Webcast/09-Trauma-and-Justice.aspx), trauma is a public health problem that affects us all – and understanding these individuals is the key to delivering support.

On Thursday, March 28th from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. EDT, Recovery Month will host a Twitter chat on Trauma: Treatment and Recovery Through the Delivery of Behavioral Health Services. Host Paolo Del Vecchio, Director of SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), will answer questions and discuss how to identify individuals affected by trauma, populations that are more drastically exposed to it (such as children experiencing a violent event, or veterans), and trauma-informed services for these individuals. The chat will also offer suggestions for interventions, treatment, and support services, as well as organizations focused on caring for these individuals.

Follow along and contribute to the Twitter chat dialogue by using the designated hashtag #RecoveryChat, to track and signify your participation in the conversation. We encourage you to share your insights and experiences with individuals with trauma-related issues.

If you are not available for the chat, tweet your questions to @RecoveryMonth in advance, using the hashtag #RecoveryChat. If you aren’t on Twitter, but would like to participate, post your questions or thoughts on the Recovery Month Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/RecoveryMonth) or send questions in an email to recoverymonthfan@samhsa.hhs.gov. A recap of the chat will also be available on the SAMHSA blog (http://blog.samhsa.gov/) following the event.

If you are new to Twitter chats, you can use the following steps to sign up and participate:
