Scott: My 10 Principles of Sobriety

I have 21 years of personal long-term recovery. I now have a Master’s Degree in Addiction Studies, work in the field of behavioral health, and conduct trainings across the country. I have 10 principles that I created for myself and live by. They are as follows:

  1. Give grace liberally!
  2. Recovery is about what you get, not what you give up!
  3. Celebrate every victory regardless of size!
  4. Surround yourself with tough day people!
  5. Adversity reveals things!
  6. Develop staying power!
  7. Always check the brush for the full story!
  8. There are reasons for rules!
  9. See the person, not the disease!
  10. Recovery takes time!
